Chandigarh: The Srishti Environment Society of PGGCG, Sector-42, Chandigarh, celebrated the Environment Conservation Fest on Sunday. On this occasion, PJS Dadhwal, Additional Director, and Additional CEO for CREST and Member Secretary of Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee was the guest of honour. As many as 133 students registered for different activities such as rangoli, face painting, ad mad show, quiz and model making. .
Lecture on postcolonial era
Chandigarh: The PG Department of English of MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, organised a lecture and an interactive session with Prof Rumina Sethi, Chairperson, Dept of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, on "Postcolonial theory and literature". The lecture was attended by a large number of students from the postgraduate and honours classes and faculty members from the college. Prof Sethi introduced the concept to the students briefing them on the history of colonialism. She highlighted the concepts of discovery, imagination and difference as significant moments in the colonisation process and substantiated the necessity of revisionist readings of canonical literature from a postcolonial perspectived.
Social activities by students
Chandigarh: Social work students of IGNOU, PU Study Centre, carried out a development work at Khuda Ali Sher in which activities such as surveying village, holding counselling sessions in school, initiating the aadhar card process, a cleanliness drive, health and hygiene lectures, imparting vocational training, clothes distribution and sensitisation about the government schemes was done. Legal awareness camp at PU
Chandigarh: The Department of Law, Panjab University, organised a legal awareness camp, 'Connecting to Serve', at village Dhanas . As many as 70 volunteer students along with the Chairperson Prof, Shalini Marwaha, Dr Vandana A Kumar, Prof Paramjeet Kaur and Dr Anil Thakur were present on the occasion. Students performed a nukkad natak on the theme of 'Child Sexual Abuse' in front of around 100 residents and 50 students of the Sarvhitkari Vidya Mandir. Prof Marwaha informed the residents about the running of legal aid clinic in the department which provides free legal aid to all needy people and briefed the residents about facilities being provided in the department itself between 2:30 pm-4 pm in collaboration with State Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh.
Inter-college debate contest
Chandigarh: The Literary Club of DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh, organised an inter-college debate contest. The topic for the debate was related to 'The first world countries are morally obligated to accept refugees.' Almost all colleges of the city participated and a discussion took place as the participants were supposed to be putting in an alternate manner-one in favour and one against; followed by a rebuttal by a succeeding team. Dr Sunita Patnayak, a senior faculty from English department and Dr JC Mehta from the Sociology Department were the judges at this event. Jasleen Virk (PGGCG-11), Shruti Sharma (MCM DAV-36) and Manish Mahajan (PGGC-11) bagged first, second and third prizes respectivelye. — TNS
