The Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) organised a conference on ‘Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights for All: Entitlement vs Reality’ at a hotel in Chandigarh.
Laws and policies around sexual and reproductive rights of young people were discussed during the conference. The session evaluated the ground realities around young people and their access to information and services related to sexual and reproductive health.
Dr Kalpana Apte, secretary-general, FPAI, talked about how important it was for the youth to have access to proper information and clarity about the changes they were facing.
The Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, that offers the legal framework for providing induced abortion services in India and the POSCO Act, 2012, were also talked about during the conference. “FPAI works on enabling the environment for youth to get care and protection while seeking sexual and reproductive healthcare, counselling and services. It reaches to around 1,90,000 young people annually,” said Vinod Kapoor, president, FPAI.
