Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Tuesday inaugurated the first-of-its-kind Government Senior Secondary School, Sangatpur Sodian here, which has been converted into a smart school at a cost of Rs 19 lakh.
The school building has been renovated and five smart classrooms fitted with modern electronic gadget have been set up. Though the rural people belonging to adjoining villages in 10-km radius have appreciated the efforts of the MLA, they have demanded that science and commerce stream should be started in the school.
Tarsem Singh, a retired officer, said, “Girls and boys, who want to pursue science or commerce stream, have to travel to Government Girls School, Sirhind, or Government School at Chanarthal Kalan, both of which are approximately 10 km from their village.”
He said arts stream was no more popular among the students. What was the point of making it a smart school when it could not offer subjects required for a better future?
Channi said the government had decided to convert 2,500 senior secondary schools into smart schools in the state and out of these, 10 schools were in Fatehgarh Sahib. MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for the school. The village panchyat also announced Rs 1-lakh grant for the school.
