The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), which is all set to extend the 200-foot wide Airport Road by 10 km to connect the international airport with New Chandigarh via Sunny Enclave, has initiated the process for the acquisition of land for the project.

According to GMADA Chief Administrator Ravi Bhagat, the land acquisition process had been started after issuing the required notification in this regard.

“We have to acquire 140 acres for the project,” said Bhagat. He added the land at Desumajra, Ranimajra, Jandpur, Singhpur, Daun, Palheri and Hoshiarpur would be acquired for it.

“Currently, objections and claims are being heard. We are hopeful of announcing awards by March 31 this year,” said Bhagat.

It is to be noted that the Rs 200-crore project will connect New Chandigarh with the international airport at Mohali directly, without entering Chandigarh.

As per claims of GMADA, with coming up of the road, the distance between the two places will be cut by 4-5 km.  Under the plan, the road will be extended from the Mohali-Kharar highway (where it starts from near the VR Punjab Mall), passing through Sunny Enclave to meet the main road (PR 4), which connects Chandigarh with the Siswan-Kurali road at Majri.
