Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary

The 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev was celebrated at Sarojini Hall, Girls Hostel No. 3, Panjab University, Chandigarh, today. An inter-hostel calligraphy competition based on the theme “Quotes from Guru Granth Sahib by saints other than Sikh Gurus” was also organised on the occasion. Sonepreet Kaur, Girls Hostel No. 6 was declared winner of the competition. Sukhmanpreet Kaur, Girls Hostel No. 3 bagged second spot and Akanksha Bhatia of Girls Hostel No. 2 and Komal of Girls Hostel No. 3 came third. Langar was served by hostel volunteers during celebrations. Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Prof Parvinder Singh, Controller of Examination, Prof Emanual Nahar, DSW, Prof Neena Caplash DSW(W), Dr Parminder Singh, Director of Sports, and wardens of other hostels also attended the celebrations. One-day national seminar 

School of Punjabi Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, in association with Punjab Arts Council, Chandigarh, organised a commemorative one-day national seminar on the occasion of the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev on the topic “Guru Nanak bani chintan: Pratirodh da sabhiachaar ate darshnik samvaad” here today. In his address, Dr Jagbir Singh, Delhi University, Delhi, said, “While Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the first Guru of Sikhs, but because of his teachings, ideologies and philosophies he should be called as Jagat Guru and Vishavguru.” Parminder Sodhi, a Punjabi poet, living in Japan shared ‘bani’ of Guru Nanak Dev. Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean (University Instructions), PU, asserted the relevance of Guru Nanak’s philosophy and teachings in the modern era. Prof Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, described various dimensions of truth while contemplating Guru Nanak’s bani. Dr Surjit Patar presided over the session and concluded thoughts of speakers in his own poetic manner. TNS

Workshop on research proposal

The Criminal Justice Practicum Cell (CJPC) of University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a workshop on “Making of a research proposal”. Discussion on e-content 

The third day of the ongoing MOOCs workshop was dedicated to the latest methodologies used in e-content development under E-PGP (Post Graduate Programme) and pedagogy and developing online courses with Google. Prof Jatinder Grover, CALEM coordinator, PU, and Dr Vishal Sharma, SWAYAM coordinator, PU, introduced the theme and topics to be discussed on the third day of the seven-day workshop for developing MOOCs. Prof Vinod K Garg from Central University of Punjab, Bathinda, discussed intricacies of e-PG Pathshala. TNS

Self-development programme 

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Swami Vivekananda Studies (ICSVS), Panjab University, in collaboration with University Institute of Applied Management Studies and U-Connect Initiative of Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM) launched its sixth edition of 12 week “Self development programme” (SDP) at Panjab University today. The chief guest on the occasion, Prof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, PU, encouraged students to avail maximum benefits from the programme. Workshop on protein purification 

Cluster Innovation Centre in Biotechnology — BioNEST, Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a workshop in collaboration with GE Healthcare Life Sciences, Bangalore, covering all critical aspects of protein purification, which is one of the most important aspects of product development, in a two-day event at the PU.  The hands-on workshop was an initiative to bridge the gap between industries and academia. It gave an opportunity to research scholars, faculty and start-ups across the tricity to experience industry grade tanning at a comfortable academic platform. The workshop focused on working and demands of the industry. More than 60 participants attended the workshop. TNS

300 learn gas chromatography 

A hand-on workshop on “Gas chromatography” was held under the aegis of the central instrumentation facility, DAV College, Sector 10, Chandigarh. The workshop was a tribute to scientific temperament of Guru Nanak Dev on his 550th birth anniversary. More than 300 students from colleges all over Punjab attended the workshop. The aim of the workshop was to familiarise students with instruments used in gas chromatography. Pankaj Sharma, product specialist, Perkin Elmer, talked about principle and applications of gas chromatography. Dr Tilak Raj, senior scientist, toxicology division, Central Forensic Laboratory, Ludhiana, delivered a lecture on “Applications of gas chromatography in forensics”.  Prof Paramjit Khurana, ex-chairperson, Chemistry Department, Panjab University, was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr Dinesh Talwar and Dr Kakoli Biswas, Registrar, DAV College, welcomed the dignitaries and participants. TNS

Lecture on artificial intelligence 

The Department of IT, SD College, organised a lecture on "Application and challenges of emerging technologies". Ravinder Singh of the cabinet office, Government Digital Services, London, delivered the talk on the occasion. In his address, he spoke about the application of artificial intelligence (AI) and challenges faced by the world to implement it. He emphasised on career options in the AI and its applications in various fields across government and private sectors. The programme was presided over by members of the SD College Society president, UK Sharma, college principal Balraj Thapar, Anirudh Joshi, PK Bajaj, SC Vaidya and Jatinder Bhatia.  TNS
