Make adulteration a non-bailable offence
Detection of illegal units manufacturing synthetic milk and byproducts has brought to fore how adulteration has become a big business. We should find a root cause of it. The question is was this business established in a day or two when it was raided? I am of the firm opinion that it must have been running for the past many years. What was the Health Department doing? It should be investigated before any further action. There are laws in our country to check adulteration, but these are not implemented strictly. Adulteration must be made a non-bailable offence.

The milk crises in Punjab
Milk is consumed by huge population every day. It is also considered pure and has numerous health benefits attached with it. Adulterated milk products raise a question on peoples’ health. Diary business has received a big jolt as more and more villagers are migrating to cities. Earlier, keeping cows and buffaloes was a tradition, but with the advent of machinery and growing inflation, it became less profitable for small farmers and the poor. Recently, out of the 724 samples of milk and its products, 434 were found adulterated in Punjab. People are being given poison to consume. The plight of Chandigarh and Panchkula is no better than Punjab. The offenders should be severely penalised for playing with the lives of people. More raids should be conducted to nab those behind such illegal activities. Officials deserve applause for the recent haul of adulterated milk products near Chandigarh.
