Helmetless riding most violated traffic rule in city

CHANDIGARH: Helmetless riding is the most violated traffic norm in the city since the implementation of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act. Of the total 7,557 challans issued till September 14, around 33.18 per cent were for riding without the safety headgear.

Helmetless riding is the most violated traffic norm in the city since the implementation of the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act. Of the total 7,557 challans issued till September 14, around 33.18 per cent were for riding without the safety headgear.

A total of 2,508 challans were issued for helmetless riding during the period. Of these, 800 men riding pillion and 638 driving two-wheelers were challaned. A total of 596 women were caught driving and 474 riding pillion without the safety headgear. Under the amended law, the fine for helmetless riding has been hiked from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000. 

Dangerous driving is also common on the city roads. Traffic cops issued 1,336 challans for various offences falling under the dangerous driving category. While 592 challans were issued for taking dangerous U-turn, 257 were issued for speeding, 133 for using phone while driving, 120 for drunken driving, 98 for driving against flow of traffic, 77 for jumping red light, 57 for dangerous driving and two for violating stoppage sign. 

Besides, stopping vehicle on zebra crossing is another offence rampant in the city, as 749 challans were issued for the violation. Seven motorists were challaned for smoking while driving vehicle.

Rs 21.32L fine collected

From September 1 to 14, Rs 21.32 lakh was collected as fine at the Traffic Lines, Sector 29. The amount includes fine for traffic offences made before September 1.
