High drama was witnessed at the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, after a policeman sat on a dharna outside the Emergency of the hospital following his mother’s death.

While blaming a doctor for the death of his mother Santosh Rani (72), Mohan Lal, who is working as a head constable with the Chandigarh Police, said his mother died due to medical negligence.

“My mother was suffering from a chronic illness nearly a week ago following which we rushed her to the GMCH. Three days ago, dialysis was performed and she was responding well to the treatment. However, due to medical negligence, her blood pressure dropped last night,” he said.

The woman passed away while her son Mohan Lal, along with his brother, was running around looking for doctors.

“It was heartbreaking when a doctor refused to see my mother and said many people die everyday,” said Mohan Lal, while staging a dharna outside the hospital.

He said the resident doctor even lied to his seniors and stated that the patient was not under his observation.

“When I confronted the doctor, the latter misbehaved with me,” he said.

He said he had spoken to the Head of the Department (HoD), Atul Sachdeva, and narrated the entire incident.

While breaking into tears, Mohan Lal said: “Honestly, we have been going through our worst times while pursuing treatment for our mother. For over a week we were in the Emergency. Somehow, I had managed to arrange a chair but last night that too was taken away by the hospital staff. I, along with my brother, had to spend the entire night standing.” Finally he lifted the protest following an assurance that the hospital authorities would probe the matter.

Meanwhile, when contacted, Medical Superintendent (MS), GMCH, Dr Ravi Gupta said he was attending a meeting in Delhi. He said Dr Sanjiv Palta was acting MS in his absence.

However, Dr Palta said Dr Surbhi was looking into the matter. Talking over the issue, Dr Surbhi said a report in this regard would be tabled before the MS tomorrow.
