Students of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology held a protest for demanding changes in hostel entry and exit timings and revocation of increased hostel charges here today. Meanwhile, the varsity administration said all issues of students were resolved today.
Girl students of the institute had raised the issue of free entry and exit on the varsity campus on Thursday. Students said, “We demanded change in the timings as we were not allowed to exit or enter hostels after 8.50 pm.”
Students also protested against the varsity over the increase in hostel charges. They demanded that order hiking charges must be reversed immediately.
Earlier, the varsity charged Rs 38,000 and Rs 45,000 for non-AC and AC rooms, respectively. This amount was increased by Rs 2,000 and Rs 4,000 for non-AC and AC rooms, respectively.
Students also raised the issue of laundry services and quality of food served in the mess. “All issues have been resolved through intervention with students. The varsity authorities have decided to allow students to enter and exit hostels and the campus as per their wish after their parents’ approval,” said Gurbinder Singh, University Registrar.
“Parents can give approval through an application or a blanket undertaking,” he added.
“The hostel charges were increased on the basis of consumption of air-conditioners, which goes up during summers. We have now lowered the charges to half the increased amount,” he said.
“The university will also provide proper laundry services and ensure that the food served in the hostel mess is up to standards. If the contractor fails to provide services as per satisfaction of students his contract will be cancelled,” he added.
