India lags in patent filing, says expert

India is among the leading nations of the world in the domain of research publications, but lags behind more than 40 nations in the domain of patent filing. This was stated by Dr Deepa K Tiku, a patent expert and attorney.

Tike was at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET), PU, on Wednesday for a lecture on ‘Understanding the patent ecosystem of India: Gaps and Remedies’.

DST-Centre for Policy Research at Panjab University, under the aegis of the Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC), had organised the lecture. Tiku talked about the evolution of patenting system in India and efforts of the government to promote patent awareness and its generation in the institutes of higher learning.

She dwelt upon various avenues offered by the IP field, which can be taken up as a career option by the young technocrats. — TNS
