The 52nd and 53rd All-Breed Championship Dog Show was organised by the Patiala Kernel Club at Raja Bhalendra Singh Stadium here today.
As many as 229 dogs of 42 breeds participated in the championship. The exhibitors came from Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country.
Breeds such as Pekingese, Shih Tzu, Caravan Hound, Chow Chow, Akita, Samoyed, Dogo Argentino and Bernese Mountain were the main attraction of the show.
CV Sudarsan from Chennai and Javinder Singh Pawar from Bengaluru judged the show on various parameters, including body structure, coat and movement in the ring.
The princely city is known for its love for dogs. The first kernel club — Northern India Kernel — was later changed into Indian Kennel Association in 1896.
Only two Indians, the Maharaja of Patiala and Jind, had served as the vice-presidents of the Indian Kennel Association. At present, it is known as Kennel Club of India. Lord Minto and Lord Irwin were its presidents.
GP Singh Brar, vice-president, Patiala Kennel Club, said, “There were different categories based on age-groups in the championship. The dogs were judged on the basis of their coat, gait, temperament and conformity with breed standards.” Brar said the Caravan Hound and Bernese Mountain breeds participated for the first time in a dog show held here.
Passion for dogs brings Bhupinder to India
Bhupinder Singh (40), a dog lover from the USA, comes to India every year only to participate in dog shows.
For the first time, Bhupinder, who was born in Kauri village near Khanna, participated in a dog with a street dog around 15 years ago. He had also won the show. Since then, his passion for dogs has increased.
Bhupinder’s love for dogs is evident from the fact that he presently owns 25 dogs. Of these dogs, his favourite is 3-year-old white Vetra of Samoyed breed, who has won many dog shows recently.
After winning in the group category, Bhupinder said, “I never miss any chance to participate in the Patiala’s dog show because it is always well-organised. More importantly, there is no partiality in the results. Before leaving for the USA in March, I will be participating in dog shows to be held in Ludhiana and Jaipur in the coming weeks.”
