With piles of garbage lying all around, broken main road and stinking ‘nullah’ passing through the village, residents of Jagatpura village are forced to live in hell-like conditions.
The village is located adjacent to the Chandigarh Airport and its road is being used as a shortcut by visitors from/to Chandigarh side.
“Our village has reduced to a dirty slum. It has also become a kind of dumping yard as everybody is throwing garbage all around without any check,” lamented Ranjit Singh Rana, a local resident while indicating towards the piles of garbage lying all around.
He said due to the presence of garbage all around, foul smell is making their lives miserable.
Adding insult to injury, dirty water of the ‘nullah’, passing through the village gets mixed with drinking water due to leakage in the water supply pipeline at several places.
“There is a foul smell in tap water, hand pumps and submersible pumps. Drinking water being supplied here is not fit for consumption,” said Kuldeep Singh, another resident of the village.
Pointing out towards the broken main road of the village, residents rued that commuting on the road, especially when it rains, is a big challenge.
“The road is broken and full of potholes. Vehicles also suffer damage while plying on the road. When it rains, potholes are filled with water and there is slush all around. As a result, several two-wheeler riders skid on the road and suffer injuries. The road remains busy throughout the day,” said Kuldeep Singh.
“We have given written complaints to the authorities several times, but nothing has been done so far,” said the residents.
