Jewellery stolen from house
Chandigarh: Jewellery worth several lakhs was stolen from a house at Ram Darbar. According to the police, a gold chain, three gold rings, a mangal sutra, a pair of earrings, three silver anklets, a pair of bangles and other jewellery items were stolen from the house on January 25. A case under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house) of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 31 police station. TNS
FOSWAC panel holds meeting
Chandigarh: The executive committee of the Federation of Sector Welfare Association Chandigarh (FOSWAC) was held at the Sector 19 community centre here on Sunday. Baljinder Singh Bittu, chairman of the federation, said vendors in Sectors 11, 15, 19, 20, 22, 23, 24, 27, 28 and 38 were rehabilitated earlier by allotting booths to them. These sectors should not be burdened again by allotting space to vendors. JS Gogia, general secretary, FOSWAC, apprised the House that a delegation had met MC Commissioner KK Yadav for ‘garbage collection’ bylaws. Biker dies in road accident
Morinda: A 33-year-old man was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a truck here late on Friday evening. The deceased was identified as Parminder Singh, a resident of Ramgarh Manda village. Mohinder Singh, father of the deceased, in his complaint to the police stated that Parminder was going towards his home from the Morinda side on his motorcycle when a truck hit him leading to his death. The police said a case under Sections 279, 304-A and 427, IPC was registered against the unidentified truck driver. TNS
One held with liquor boxes
Kharar: The police arrested a person following the recovery of 52 boxes of liquor from a car near Gharuan village on the Kharar-Morinda road on Sunday. The police intercepted the car at a naka. When the driver saw the police party, he fled from the spot leaving the car behind. However, the police arrested another person, Sujjet Kumar, and recovered 52 boxes of liquor from the car. The accused was produced in the court which sent him to two-day police remand. The car driver is yet to be nabbed. OC
Woman booked for thrashing kid
Zirakpur: The police have booked a woman for allegedly beating an 11-year-old girl here. According to the police, Ankita Dutt, a resident of Nirmal Chaya, Zirakpur, was booked on the victim’s statement. The victim used to stay with the woman at the flat where she worked as domestic help. The victim told the police that the woman used to beat her regularly. A case was registered against woman, the police said. OC
Surinder, Bharti re-elected
Chandigarh: Priyank Bharti (IAS) and Surinder Mahajan were unanimously elected as president and general secretary, respectively, during the annual general meeting of the Chandigarh Badminton Association, on Sunday. Col Raj Parmar and Vijay Sharma were elected as senior vice-president and treasurer, respectively. The elected association members also decided to conduct more tournaments for sub-junior and senior categories this year. The elections were headed by the observers from Chandigarh Sports Council and Chandigarh Olympic Association. TNS
gopal, Kaylea win marathon
Chandigarh: Gopal and Kaylea Brase claimed top positions in the 21km run for men and women (18 to 40 years), respectively, in the fifth Punjab Half Marathon, on Sunday. In the men (40 to 50 years) category Sebastian Wilk claimed the first position, followed by Sajiny Roshan at second position. SabodhSaggi claimed the men (50 to 60 years) title, while Amar Chauhan claimed the top position in the 60+ category. In the men’s 10 km half marathon (U-18), Abhishek claimed the top podium, while Payal Singh won women’s title. In the 18 to 45 years, Sanjay and Naina won the first position in men and women category, respectively. In the 45+ category, Amarjit Singh bagged the first position, while Gaganpreet Samra won the women’s title. TNS

Pranit shines in cricket meet
Chandigarh: Ten-year-old Pranit Kochhar was adjudged best bowler of the St Kabir U-12 Trophy, concluded on Sunday. The right-arm leg-spinner took 10 wickets, including a five-wicket haul, in four matches to claim the award. Five teams participated in this championship. Kochhar is a student of Bhavan Vidyalaya Chandigarh. TNS
