Jivaj Chawla ousted second seed Devansh Verma 6-4 6-4 to enter the boys U-14 semifinals in the Roots-AITA Talent Series (TS-7) National Ranking Championship at the Roots Tennis Academy in Zirakpur on Tuesday.
Fifth seed Lakshya Gupta registered a 6-3 6-4 win over Siddhant Krishna, while Harmanjeet Singh dismissed Aryan Jolly 6-1 6-1. Third seed Aditya Chauhan overcame Shubham Singh in a three-setter to seal a spot in the last-four stage of the championship.
Chauhan won the opening set 6-2, but Shubham fought his way back into the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. Chauhan, though, regained his composure to clinch the decider 6-2 and stay alive in the competition.
Maitreyi in quarters
In the girls’ U-14 category, top seed Maitreyi Phogat downed Bhumika Gupta 6-4 6-1 to ease into the quarterfinals.
Divjot Kaur rallied from a set down to beat Ananya Dogra 1-6 6-1 (10-7), while Kushi Sharma edged past Ishita Sahoo 6-3 6-3. Bhumi Kakkar came from behind to register a 6-7(4) 6-3 (11-3) win over third seed Anasha Verma.
Fourth seed Jeshna humbled Sehej Kaur 6-3 6-0 to ease into the last-eight stage of the championship. Omisha beat Avneet Kaur 6-4 6-2, while Sia Mahajan tamed Vanshika Mehta 6-2 6-3.
Devansh advances
Devansh Verma, meanwhile, registered a 6-0 6-3 win over Arnav Malik in the boys’ U-16 pre-quarterfinals.
Third seed Sarthak Gandhi packed off Shivansh Gupta 6-0 6-2, while Sarthak Singla got past Tushar Bajaj 6-0 6-4. Aditya Thakur was awarded a walkover against Praney Sharma.
Second seed Rishi Dahiya mastered Tejesh Sahoo 6-0 6-1 to march into the quarters.
Top seed Dhairya Chadha, sixth seed Amitoj Singh and Akash Srinivasan had won their respective pre-quarterfinal matches on Monday.
