Kathak Utsav ends on a colourful note

Chandigarh, January 21

The first-ever 'Kathak Utsav' organised in the city by the Pracheen Kala Kendra in collaboration with the National Kathak Kendra, New Delhi, concluded at Tagore Theatre, here today.

As many as 18 eminent performing maestros supported by 36 musicians brought alive the best nuances of three traditional schools of Kathak namely Jaipur, Lucknow and Banaras.

Canada-based Kathak danseuse Sudeshna Maulik lit up the concluding day with Ananda Tandav and captivated the audience with her pure skill and expressions. She concluded her recital with Meera Bai's bhajan based on thumri ang.

After's Sudeshna's scintillating performance, the young duo of Vasu and Vaibhav Maharaj from Mumbai took the centre stage. Commenced with invocatory Madrashtakam, they presented traditional Kathak dance with specialties of Banaras Gharana in tode, tukde , paran, gat, pairon ki chalen  with quite ease and graceful movements.

Today's last set of dance items was performed by repertory of Kathak Kendra and disciples of Guru Rajendra Gangani. The group begins their recital with Rudrastkam followed by a pure Kathak syllables. The audience gave standing ovation to the artistes.

Kendra chairman SK Monga IAS ( retd), Registrar Dr Shobha Koser and Kamilini Asthana of Kathak Kendra, Delhi, honoured the artistes.
