Stray dogs are a bane of Kharar. Residents are too scared to venture outdoors in the evening. A large number of dog-bite cases have been reported at the Civil Hospital, Kharar. According to information, 728 dog-bite cases were reported at the Civil Hospital during 2016. From January to June 2017, as many as 581 dog-bite cases were reported at the Civil Hospital as compared to 365 cases during this period in 2016. There is an alarming increase in the number of dog-bite cases. Dr HS Obroi, SMO, Civil Hospital, Kharar, said: “Free vaccination is available at the hospital and is provided to patients according to their needs.” The number of stray dogs is increasing here because the Kharar Municipal Council has no arrangements for the sterilisation of dogs. Last year, when the council tried to dislocate stray dogs from Kharar, some residents of Gillco Valley and Sunny Enclave reported the matter to the Animal Welfare Board of India, Deputy Commissioner, Mohali, and Municipal Council president, Kharar, in alleging cruelty against dogs by the MC staff.

Udit Bhatia of Mundi Kharar alleged that nothing had been done so far by the Municipal Council.

Dasrshan Singh, a civic official, said the matter related to sterilisation, operation theatre for dogs and proper place for their care and treatment after the operation would be discussed in the forthcoming meeting of the council.
