Khush Sharma controlled his nerves to stun fifth seed Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje to make his way into the boys’ U-18 main draw on the second day of the CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament (U-16 & U-18) at the Sector CLTA Complex today.
Sharma started well to take the first set 6-4, but Jhoje replied by winning the next set 5-7. In the final set, it was neck and neck fight but Sharma managed to edge past Jhoje 7-5.
Top seed Nitin Jaipal Singh also had a tough day but he came through by defeating Samarbir Singh Sidhu. Jaipal won the first set 6-3, but faced tough resistance in the second as Sidhu logged a 6-7(6) victory. However, in the final set Jaipal improved his shot selection to win 6-3. Second seed Shashikant Rajput registered an easy 6-1 7-6(3) win over Dhananjay Singh, while Bhavnish Sangwan defeated Moksh Puri 7-5(6) 6-4 to confirm his berth in the next round. Fourth seed Yashvardhan Singh also moved ahead by defeating Lakshya Gupta 6-2 6-0.
In another upset of the day, Pranav Mehta defeated sixth seed Tejas Kartikey 6-1 6-4. Unseeded Sarabjot Singh defeated eighth seed Krishang Raghuvanshi 7-5 2-6 6-0 to make it to the main draw. Seventh seed Gurnoor Singh Kular won the last match of the day by defeating Ajbani Dahiya 6-2 6-1. —TNS
