Greeting cards, photo frames and murals have taken a back seat for the youth in the city in their selection of gifts for their valentines this year. With Valentine’s Day round the corner, pet shops in the city have been flooded with demands for pairs of lovebirds as well as pugs.

Anjali (25), a software engineer, who got married a year ago, has decided to gift a pair of lovebirds to her husband on their first Valentine’s Day after the wedding.

“Lovebirds are known for living with each other all the time and they cannot part ways, no matter what happens. By gifting a pair of love birds, I want to convey to my husband that we should also follow the example of the lovebirds,” Anjali said.

Anirudh Arora, a college student, has placed an order for a pug for his girlfriend as she has been yearning to own a pet for long. “The purpose of gifting each other on Valentine’s Day is to make each other happy and the gift should remind you of the affection of your partner. I am sure she will love it,” he said.

“Youngsters these days do not mind spending more on gifts. The puppies cost between Rs 7,000 and Rs 20,000,” said the owner of Sheena Kennel, Sonu, Sector 20. “We have received orders for 10 puppies of different breeds,” said Rajat Guglani, owner of Anil’s 22 The Pet Shop, Sector 22.

Stationery items with names a hit too

Stationery items with individual names engraved on these are also a favourite among residents.

“Youths have approached us to get the names of their beloved engraved on diaries and pens with designer fonts,” said Sumit Nayyar, from Engravepro, Sector 22.
