Chandigarh, July 18

Top seed Mahi Tyagi of Delhi outplayed Haryana’s Bhumika Pareek 6-0 6-1 to enter the girls’ U-14 quarterfinals in the ongoing CLTA-AITA Championship Series (CS-7) Tennis Tournament here on Wednesday.

Local contender Milli Pandit stunned city counterpart and eighth seed Maitreyi Phogat 6-3 6-0, while third seed Riya Bhatia of Uttarakhand registered a 6-4 6-2 win over Chandigarh’s Snigdha Sran.

Fourth seed Catherine Bhangu blanked Sargam Singla 6-0 6-0 in the last-16 match. Sixth seed Harleen Dhanda of Punjab humbled Haryana’s Khushi Sharma 6-3 6-1, while seventh seed Jyotsana Yadav packed off Gauri Mahajan to enter quarterfinals.

Harleen, Simran move to quarters

In the girls’ U-18 pre-quarterfinals, top seed Harleen Kaur registered a convincing 6- 6-2 win over Gujarat’s Nirva Patel. Second seed Simran Pritam of Punjab downed Milli Pandit 6-1 6-2, while third seed Princy Panchal of Haryana dismissed Radhika Vasudeva 6-0 6-1.  

Haryana’s Suryanshi Tanwar also marched into the last-eight stage of the competition with 7-6(0) 6-2 win over fourth seed Nimrat Kaur Atwal. Seventh seed Ameek Kiran Batth of Punjab edged Delhi’s Mahi Tyagi 6-3 6-2, while eighth seed Japjot Kaur came from behind to overcome Catherine Bhangu 3-6 6-2 6-1.

Riya Bhatia humbled sixth seed Lavanaya Sabharwal of Haryana 6-4 6-1 to stay alive in the competition.

Krishan marches on

Top seed Krishan Hooda of Haryana, meanwhile, lived up to his billing as he dumped Punjab’s Manveer Singh 6-2 6-4 to ease into the boys’ U-18 quarterfinals.

Third seed Naresh Badgujar thumped Vipul Pratap Singh 6-1 6-0 and fifth seed Bhupender Dahiya of Haryana ousted Gujarat’s Anish Lal 6-2 6-0. Haryana’s Rohan Mittal rallied from a set down to beat Sukhpreet Singh 6-7(8) 6-4 6-2, while sixth seed Tushar Madan tamed Dhananjay Singh 6-3 6-1. Local challenger and seventh seed Parveen Kumar beat Amaan Mohammad Siddiqui in a marathon three-setter.

Parveen lost the opening set 4-6, but fought his way back into the match with a 7-6(5) win in the second set before clinching the decider 6-4 to stay in the contention for a semifinal spot.

Sukhpreet sails through

In the boy’s U-14 category, top seed Sukhpreet Singh registered a 6-3 6-1 win over Uttar Pradesh’s Abdullah Shakir to ease into the quarterfinals.

Second seed Arhaan Pahwa packed off Harjot Singh 6-0 6-1, while third seed Navya Verma raced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1 6-4 win over Shubam Singh. 

Fourth seed Aryan Thakur blanked Haryana’s Akshat Dhull and fifth seed Lokesh Pun drubbed Kartik Sunil Kumar 6-0 6-0. Kesav Goel also logged an easy 6-0 6-1 win over Pranav Sharma. The quarterfinals matches of all the categories, including doubles, will be played on Thursday.
