Man succumbs to injuries

Chandigarh: In a hit-and-run case, an Activa rider was killed after his scooter was hit by a car outside the ISBT, Sector 43, on January 27. The victim was seriously injured and succumbed to his injuries later. Complainant Rahul Bhatnagar reported that a white car hit the scooter of his brother Harsh Bhatnagar, a resident of Dau village in Mohali district, in front of the entry gate outside the ISBT. Harsh was admitted to the PGI, where he died. A case has been registered against the unknown driver at the Sector 36 police station. tns

Man found dead in Sector 49 

Chandigarh: An unidentified man was found dead near a temple in Sector 49 on Tuesday morning. The police have ruled out any foul play in the incident. The police said the victim, aged around 35, was found dead in the morning after which they reached the spot. The victim, who seemed to be a beggar, did not have any injury marks on the body. “He probably died due to cold,” said a police official. A CFSL team also visited the spot. TNS

Int’l collaboration  needed, says PU VC

Chandigarh: Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar, in a meeting with the faculty of Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CNSNT) on the thrust area research carried out at the centre, stressed upon the need for developing collaborations with international institutes and industrial partnership. Prof Shankarji Jha, Dean, University Instructions, Prof Ramanjit Johal, Prof Jagat Bhusan, Prof Navdeep Goyal, Prof Sarbjeet Singh, along with the faculty of CNSNT — Dr Sunil Arora, Dr Jadab Sharma and Dr Akash Katoch — were present in the meeting.  — TNS

Jaishankar Prasad Jayanti

Chandigarh: The Department of Hindi, Panjab University, will celebrate the birth anniversary of author and dramatist Jaishankar Prasad on Wednesday. Dr Gurmeet Singh, chairperson of the department, said, “We have initiated an effort to involve the colleges in the city by encouraging their participation in literary events.”  — TNS

Personification contest at uils

Chandigarh: The Literary Society of University Institute of Legal Studies, PU, conducted an Intra-Department Personification Competition under Avant Garde on Tuesday. Rahul Sangwan and Ankur Goyat were adjudged as the winners, Kartik Duvedi and Abhimanyu were awarded the trophy of first runners-up, while Surner Singh and Sanigdha shared the trophy for the second runners-up. — TNS

RBU holds GST workshop 

Kharar: Tax expert Keshav R Garg conducted a GST workshop at the University School of Management Studies at USMS department of Rayat Bahra University. Garg talked about the penalties and prosecution provisions under the GST Act. The session was conducted with the objective of providing students of MBA, BBA and BCom the detailed knowledge of implementation and structure of GST. He also elaborated on various issues related to the taxation structure of India, Integrated GST (IGST) and e-way bill. — OC

Delhi-Una train halts at Kharar 

Kharar: Ananadpur Sahib MP Prem Singh Chandumajra flagged off the Delhi-Una Jan Shatabdi at the Kharar railway station on Monday night. The train made a one-minute halt. Chandumajra said he would ensure that the train between Chandigarh and Amristar, too, stopped here.  No train to Delhi or Amritsar stops at the railway station and this has been a long-standing demand of residents. Kharar MLA Kanwar Sandhu was also present on the occasion. OC

SHO accused of misbehaviour

Ambala: A woman in Ambala accused a station house officer (SHO) of misbehaviour. The woman on Tuesday met Health Minister Anil Vij at his residence, submitted her complaint, and sought action against the police officer. The woman alleged that she had reached the police station in connection with a cheating case and asked the official concerned as to why her name was not mentioned as the complainant, following which the official misbehaved with her. The minister has marked her complaint to the DSP for inquiry. TNS

‘80% adolescent girls anaemic’

Chandigarh: As adolescent girls are at a risk of anaemia and have menstrual problems, the PGI organised a health talk on “Kishori Diwas” at an anganwadi centre in Sector 38 here on Tuesday. Adolescence is transitionary stage of life from childhood to adulthood prone to health-related problems. The health talk was delivered by expert Rupinder Kaur in which she emphasised the importance of menstrual hygiene in prevention of reproductive tract infections among adolescents. She also emphasised the need of regular de-worming and intake of iron and folic acid tablets for prophylaxis of anaemia as around 80 per cent of the adolescent girls are anaemic as per the latest data of NFSH-4. Street cleaning drive at Colony

Chandigarh: Of the total 20,912 patients from Indira Colony seen at the urban health centre, 843 had diarrhoea and 86 had acute lower respiratory diseases in children under the age group of five in 2017. This was stated by doctors during a two-week drive of the Swachh Indira Colony Abhiyan organised by the PGI along with Public Health Development Society. Dr Har Ashish Jindal, senior resident, Dr Atul Gupta, junior resident, and multipurpose health workers organised a street cleaning drive with a theme, “Swachh Colony, Swasth Colony”, here on Tuesday”. Dr JS Thakur from the PGI said sanitary inspectors, workers and local residents cleaned the streets of the colony. Residents were asked to segregate dry and wet waste and utilise garbage carts in the colony.  TNS

1 held with liquor

Kharar: The Kurali police arrested Kuldeep Bohra, a resident of Balachaur, with 12 boxes of liquor. The liquor was recovered from his car. ASI Kesar Singh said a case under the Excise Act had been registered at the Kurali police station. He said the suspect, along with another person, was coming from the Chandigarh side. On seeing the police party, they tried to escape. The other suspect managed to flee. — OC
