Chandigarh, September 12
The House Tax Assessment Committee of the Municipal Corporation today said that all serving or retired defence personnel from the city who have more than 300 sq yard house would also be exempted from paying property tax.
Those who have houses up to 300 sq yard area are already exempted from paying tax, while those who have more than that are supposed to pay tax with 50 per cent rebate.
“If someone voluntarily does not want to avail of the exemption, he/she can pay. The committee has approved it and now it will go to the General House meeting for further approval,” said nominated councillor Ajay Dutta, chairman of the committee.
The meeting also approved to waive off interest for the period 2004-2006 in respect of temporary sheds in Industrial Area Phase I and II. The traders are ready to pay the principal amount, but not the interest as they did not know about the tax for sheds and even the Municipal Corporation did not ask for it for many years.
The committee also resolved that all religious places and social organisations, which were not involved in commercial activities, should also be exempted from tax. All these decisions will be tabled in the House meeting for approval. — TNS
