Patiala, October 7
The Municipal Corporation (MC) has decided to rope in self-help groups (SHGs) to make jute and cloth bags and provide them at nominal charges under the project, ‘Rags to Bags’.
Community development officer Aman Sekhon said the corporation had decided to collect clothes from people that will be used to make cloth bags. “The project not only aims at making the city plastic-free, but it will also generate demand for cloth and jute bags and will also help in providing the groups a livelihood.”
He said, “The MC has made a bank of such old clothes. We have also made SHGs of students from the Government Polytechnic College for Women for the purpose.”
He said the MC would buy cloth and jute bags from the SHGs. “We will remain the first buyer of the products. Later, the groups will be able to sell bags to people on nominal rates,” he said.
Meanwhile, inmates at the Patiala Central Jail have already started making file covers from scrap paper. Officials said the file covers would be available at Rs 5 each.
