In view of fast-moving traffic on service roads leading to accidents, these roads in Chandigarh will soon have a speed limit, which is at present missing. The traffic police will then issue challans to speeding motorists.

The road accident analysis cell of the UT traffic police has observed that accidents on service roads due to speeding vehicles have led to a rise in the total number of road accidents in the city. The service roads, especially those on Dakshin Marg and Madhya Marg, have witnessed several accidents.

Shashank Anand, SSP (Traffic), said due to a rise in the number of accidents on the service roads, they had decided to fix a maximum speed limit for these roads as well. “We are contemplating fixing a speed limit for the service roads,” he said.

At present, the speed limit on various roads, including Dakshin Marg, Purv Marg and Madhya Marg, is 60 kmph for cars and 45 kmph for two-wheelers, while on Udyog Path, it is 50 kmph for cars and 45 kmph for two-wheelers.

The SSP said cyclists moving on service lanes, especially from the Airport light point to Tribune Chowk on Dakshin Marg, were vulnerable to accidents due to the fast-moving traffic. “We are also planning to come up with speed humps on the service roads,” he said.

With growing traffic on main roads, even buses can been seen speeding on service roads to avoid traffic jams, further increasing the risk of road accidents.

At present, vehicles speeding on service roads are not challaned for speeding. However, soon after the maximum speed limit on these roads is decided, the police will start issuing challans to offenders.
