The Mohali Municipal Corporation today fixed charges for door-to-door garbage collection in the town.

The House approved Rs 70 per family for the residential premises of size up to 250 sq yd. For the premises of size from 250 sq yd up to 500 sq yd and 500 sq yd to 1000 sq yd, the charges will be Rs 100 per family and Rs 150 per family, respectively. The garbage collection rates for those residing in flats have been fixed as Rs 70 per family.

Interestingly, the job of garbage collection from the houses in the town is being handled by private players, on which the MC has no control. Different localities have different garbage collectors, who have set the rates on their own, so the rates vary for different areas.

For dhabas/restaurants, the rates have been set at Rs 1,000, while for hospitals, the rate is Rs 2,000. The rates for private/government schools have been fixed as Rs 1 per child. The rates for industrial area buildings are set as Rs 500 for up to 500 sq yd; Rs 1,000 for up to 1000 sq yd and Rs 2,000 for up to 2000 sq yd.

Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh said: “The rates in question have been fixed following the instructions from the Centre. It is true that the garbage collection is being handled by private players, but rates have now been fixed by the MC. The area counselors and the resident welfare associations could intervene if somebody charges more than what have been fixed by the MC,” said the Mayor.

A senior official of the MC admitted that the issue (fixing of rates) was strange as the MC had no authority over the private garbage collectors.

PRUNING MACHINE ISSUE TO BE RESOLVED SOON

Mohali MC Commissioner Sandeep Hans assured the House of resolving the issue of France-made reach mower-cum-tree pruning machine worth Rs 1.79 crore by putting it up before the principal secretary and newly-appointed director of the local government. While all councillors showed interest in taking possession of the machine by making the remaining payment to the private firm, the Mayor apprised them of the issue involved in it. "They (the government officials) thought that the rate of the machine is very high. This is the main issue," said Mohali Mayor Kulwant Singh. It is to be noted that the MC has already made an advance payment of Rs 90 lakh to the company.

JE REPRIMANDED

Following the complaints regarding shirking of work and ignoring the phone calls/instructions of councillors, a Junior Engineer (horticulture) was reprimand and recieved a warning from the Mayor and the Commissioner in the House on Monday. Some councillors had accused JE Surnider Goyal of shirking work and not paying heed to their complaints/instructions. Goyal, who was summoned to appear before the House, was reprimanded for his behavior and directed to file his reply within 10 days.

Rs 15 PER ANIMAL TO GAUSHALA

The House approved to give assistance of Rs 15 per animal to the Chandigarh-based organisation which is looking after the affairs of 'Gopal Gaushala' for free. The MC used to pay Rs 27 per animal to the previous organisation. "The organisation which is currently looking after all affairs free of cost, are facing financial crunch as the donations being received by them were insufficient. The House has approved Rs 15 per animal as financial assistance to them," said the Mayor.

FREE USE OF COMMUNITY CENTRES

The issue of giving facility of using community centres free of cost for one day to PUDA, GMADA and MC officials for private functions is yet to be decided by the House. The officials were being provided with the facility when the community centres were being looked after by the GMADA. Though all councillors were unanimous on rejecting the proposal, the issue has been kept pending to check whether or not there are instructions from the state government in this regard. The rate of community centre is Rs 15,000 per day.
