Mohali MC to hire Udgir-based NGO for sterilisation drive

Finally, the Mohali Municipal Corporation has decided to hire an Udgir-based NGO for the sterilisation of stray dogs.

“The NGO will catch dogs, sterilise them and provide post-operative care, along with bearing expenses of medicines, and then drop them at the pick-up point. “We will pay them Rs 1,020 for a dog and Rs 1,050 for a bitch,” said Rajesh Dhiman, Municipal Commissioner.

An agreement in this regard will be signed between the MC and the NGO in a day or two. The MC will provide them the required infrastructure, including cages and a operation theatre.

Notably, the sterilisation drive had come to a halt last month following the MC’s decision of hiring a new private player for the job.

Dhiman said the drive was likely to restart next week. “We will spend Rs 10-15 lakh for the revamp of the operation theatre,” said Dhiman.

“Earlier, the MC had announced to set up another operation theatre to speed up the sterilisation drive but the plan was shelved later. We will now install CCTV cameras in the operation theatre and at the premises where dogs will be kept for the purpose,” Dhiman added.

The number of cages for dogs will also be increased from 14 to 50. So far, the MC is unaware about the number of stray dogs in the city. “We have already requested the Mohali Deputy Commissioner for the counting of stray dogs,” added Dhiman. “The sterilisation will be carried out as per area-wise schedule,” the Municipal Commissioner added.
