Mohali, December 21
Residents of Sectors 76-80 staged a protest outside the PUDA Bhawan in Phase 8 here against the water tariff hike in certain sectors of Mohali, demanding a rollback of tariff rates to the previous level.
The residents said the decision by GMADA had imposed immense financial burden.
Raghbir Singh said water tariff bills had risen by 300-400 per cent due to tariff hike. He said “One household, which earlier paid Rs 800 for 3 months, now has to shell out Rs 3,200. The hike is extortionate and should be brought on a par with the rates in Chandigarh.”
Members of the Sector 76-80 Plot Allotment and Development Welfare Committee said they had raised the water tariff hike issue in a meeting with senior GMADA officials in November. Sucha Singh Kalaur, president of the committee, said: “Our major concern is the hike in water tariff. Other development works related to pending allotment of houses, maintenance of parks and roads have been put forward.” “We have requested GMADA officials to reduce tariff rates within one month, following which we will intensify agitation,” he said. — TNS
