Top seed Shashikant Rajput’s victory run at the CLTA-AITA Championship Series (CS-7) Tennis Tournament came to a halt after he was stunned by fourth seed Naresh Badgujar in straight sets in the boys’ U-16 semifinals at the CLTA Complex, Sector 10, here today.
Naresh won the opening set in tie break 7-6(3) and conceded just one game in the second (6-1) to march into the final.
Naresh will play unseeded Dhruv Tangri, who rallied from a set down to upset second seed Krishan Hooda and continue his dream run in the tournament.
Dhruv lost the first set 2-6, but fought back his way into the match with a 6-2 win in the second set. He then overcame Hooda in the decider (7-5) to set up the title clash with Naresh.
Rajput, meanwhile, made amends during his semifinal match in the boys’ U-18 category, beating Krish Patel 6-1 6-1.
In the final Rajput will face top seed Calvin Golmei, who packed off eighth seed Depender Grewal in straight sets.
Calvin won the first set 6-1, but in the second set Deepender offered some resistance before going down 5-7 to the top seed.
In Girls U-16 semifinals, top seed Richa Chougule maintained a clean slate as she humbled seventh seed Konika Singh Dhull 6-2 7-5.
Second seed Sandeepti Singh Rao also had an easy outing as she registered a 6-2 7-5 win over third seed Simran Pritam.
Top seed Prinkle Singh marched into the girls’ U-18 final after she tamed Ashpreet Kaur Bajwa 6-3 6-4.
In the final, Prinkle will face third seed Sarah Dev, who got the better of Sandeepti 6-2 6-3.
The singles’ final matches will be played on Friday.
Krishan-Bhupender, Sarah-Prinkle win titles
Krishan Hooda and Bhupender Dahiya overcame Nitin Jaipal Singh and Ajay Malik in an intense three setter to clinch the boys’ U-18 doubles title at the CLTA Complex on Thursday. The duo won the opening set 6-2 but lost the second set 5-7 to allow Nitin and Ajay to make a comeback into the match. In the decider, though, the pair regained their composure to beat their opponents 10-5. In the girls’ U-18 doubles final, Sarah Dev and Prinkle Singh registered a 6- 6-4 win over Himaanshika and Kaavya Sawhney to clinch the title.
