Navdeep Goyal group reigned supreme on the second day too as it has now nine Deans. However, it lost election to the Dean, business management and commerce, to an independent while one is allotted as per rotation in pharmaceutical sciences.
Student refuses to contest against teacher
The day started with election of Dean Arts. Prof Ronki Ram was contesting and had campaigned too. But Prof Pam Rajput joined the fray this morning. Soon, Prof Ronki Ram said as Prof Rajput was her teacher, so he wouldn’t like to contest.
Prof Rajput was declared elected unopposed. Both belong to the Navdeep Goyal group.
For Dean Languages, Prof Gurpal Singh of Navdeep Goyal group contested against Prof Akshaya Kumar, who fought as an independent.
Prof Gurpal Singh, who is chairperson of Evening Studies Department, was declared elected as he got 42 votes while Prof Akshaya, from English and Cultural Studies Department, received 37.
Prof Devinder Mehta, former chairperson of Physics Department, was elected unopposed as Dean, Faculty of Science. Prof Mehta is also from the Navdeep Goyal group.
From the same group, HS Gosal was elected as Dean, Design and Fine Arts, and SS Sangha as Dean Education. Both did not face any contest.
On Monday, from the Navdeep Goyal’s group, Anu Chatrath as Dean Law, Dr Dalip Kumar as Dean Dairying, Animal Husbandry and Agriculture and Dr Amod Gupta as Dean Medical Sciences were elected unopposed.
Debate over rotation in engineering faculty
Usually, faculties of engineering and technology and pharmaceutical sciences elect Deans by rotation. Prof Manoj Kumar was elected as Dean Pharmaceutical Sciences but a debate started over Dean of Engineering and Technology. Earlier, the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and the University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET) used to give Deans by rotation. But the Prof Navdeep Goyal group said that it should be given to Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur, which has an engineering course. The debate continued long. At one time, election was proposed or that from next year Hoshiarpur centre would get Dean.
“The debate continued for over one-and-half hours. We did not budge. Finally, Prof Harminder Singh Bains, who is from Hoshiarpur centre, is allowed to head as Dean,” said Prof Navdeep Goyal. Prof Bains belongs to the Navdeep Goyal group.
Prof Karamjeet wins
Prof Karamjeet Singh, from University Business School (UBS), was contesting for Dean, Business Management And Commerce. While from the Navdeep Goyal’s group Prof Manoj K Sharma was contesting. Despite Prof Karamjeet Singh being an independent candidate, he emerged victorious with 45 votes while Prof Sharma received 25.
