Navy man held on rape charge

Chandigarh: A 24-year-old Navy man has been arrested for allegedly raping a girl on the pretext of getting married. The victim is three months pregnant.

Sources said the accused, Vjinder Singh, was a resident of Kangra in HP. The victim came in contact with the accused in 2015 after which they became friends. The victim, who is also a resident of Kangra, in her statement to the police, alleged that the accused made physical relations with her on the pretext of getting married to her, but later refused.

A case under Sections 376 (rape) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Sector 34 police station. The accused was arrested and produced before a court, which remanded him in judicial custody. TNS

2 killed, 1 hurt as truck hits auto

Mohali: Two persons were killed and one was seriously injured in an accident on the Tangori road on Monday. The incident occurred when a truck hit an auto-rickshaw. The deceased have been identified as Rahul, a private sector employee, and Raju Rai, the auto driver. Rohit, who was seated on the back seat with Rahul, was seriously injured. The victims were taken to the Civil Hospital in Mohali where two of them were declared brought dead. TNS

Afghan national gets life term 

Chandigarh: A local court on Monday sentenced an Afghan national and ex-student of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 46, Ehsanullah to life imprisonment for murdering another Afghan student of the same college in March last year. A fine of Rs 5,000 was also imposed on him. A BA-III student, 21-year-old Sanaullah was stabbed by Ehsanullah on March 21, 2016, on the campus. The reason behind the attack was old enmity. Both were rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, by the college authorities. The victim died during treatment. Ehsanullah had suffered minor injuries. A case was registered against Ehsanullah at the Sector 34 police station. TNS

Road rage: Accused seeks bail 

Chandigarh: Col Manveer Bains, accused of murdering a Sector 37 resident, Praveen Yadav, in a road rage, has applied for bail. The application was taken up in a local court on Monday and the police will submit their reply on Wednesday. The police are also to file their reply to the revision petition filed by Bains for B-class facilities in jail and it will be taken up on Tuesday. The bail application says Yadav died of natural causes, which is supported by a medical report by doctors of the GMCH- 32. The 48-year-old Mohali resident was arrested on September 2 and booked for murder after the family of deceased Praveen Yadav alleged that he had been “beaten to death”. According to the police, Bains thrashed Yadav on the road dividing Sectors 34 and 35. TNS

MC chief to be pvt secy to Puri 

Chandigarh: Municipal Commissioner Baldeo Purushartha, a 2002-batch Punjab cadre IAS officer,  will be appointed  as the  private  secretary to Hardeep  Puri, Minister of  State for  Housing  and  Urban Development.  The  Ministry  of Urban Development has conveyed the  desire of the minister to the  Chief Secretary  of  Punjab, seeking cadre  clearance and the vigilance  disciplinary status  so that the necessary  approval from the DoPT  may be obtained  for his appointment as  early as  possible.   Purushartha has already conveyed his willingness for the   new assignment. The Commissioner  had joined the Administration on December  10, 2015, for  three  years. The Administration will soon seek a panel of IAS  officers  from Punjab for the  appointment  of the  new Commissioner. TNS
