Chandigarh, March 27

Navya Verma handed a 6-1 6-1 drubbing to Evan Luthra to enter the boys’ U-14 quarterfinals in the ongoing STA-AITA Talent Series (TS-7) Tennis Championship at the Chandigarh Club, Sector 1, here on Tuesday.

Shivdev Walia registered a 6-0 6-1 win over Abhimanyu Goyal, while Aditya Chauhan rallied back from a set down to beat Lakshay Gupta. 

Chauhan lost the opening set 2-6, but fought his way back into the match with 6-4 win in the second set. In the decider, he outplayed Gupta 6-1 to stay alive in the competition.

Aarav Joshi edged out Harjot Singh 6-2 6-2 to advance to the last-eight stage of the championship. In another pre-quarterfinal match, Rijul Bhatia downed Vakshat Dhull 6-1 6-2.  

Jitin, Sidharth advance 

Jitin Chetry, meanwhile, humbled Aheem Singh 6-0 6-2 to confirm his quarterfinal berth in the boy’s U-16 category. Parth Goel registered a 6-1 6-4 win over Paras Chauhan.

Sidharth Goel overwhelmed Amitoj Sachdeva 7-5 6-3, while Shivdev Walia came back from a set down to beat Avish Verma in a marathon three-setter.

After losing the opening set 3-6, Walia rallied to restore the parity with a 6-1 win in the second. He then overcame Goel 7-5 in the final set to ensure a place in the quarterfinals. 

Gaurav Kumar had an easy outing as he demolished Rishi Dahiya 6-0 6-0 in less than an hour. Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje tamed Aditya Tinjani 6-0 6-1.

Vishita overcomes Jeshna

In the girls’ U-14 category, Vishita Ranbir overcame Jeshna in a hard-fought three-setter to seal a place in the last-16 stage of the championship.  

Vishita took the lead with a 7-6(3) win in the opening set, but a resilient Jeshna came back to draw level with a 6-3 win in the following set. 

In the decider, both players fought tooth and nail but it was Vishita who held her nerve at the crucial juncture to seal the set 7-6(6) and proceed to next level. 

Vanya Arora registered a 6-3 7-6(1) win over Bhumi Kakkar, while Noorpreet Sipray defeated Ajenika Puri 6-4 6-4. Vedaa Anand edged out Anusha Verma 6-4 6-3. 

In another opening round match, Rubani Sidhu overpowered Sia Mahajan 6-4 6-1.
