At a time when the Centre is promoting the need for toilets in every household, the new cricket stadium on Panjab University campus remains without the restrooms.
During a recently held inter-college cricket championship for women, the cricketers were forced to use the toilets in the adjoining departments of the ground.
The ground also does not have proper change rooms, making the things even more difficult for the players, especially the women cricketers.
According to sources, the ground was not ready to host the matches, especially for women.
The new ground is surrounded by boys’ hostel and various other university departments, thus limiting the options for women cricketers.
"Not only washrooms, there were no adequate arrangements for drinking water facility and medical facility on the ground. The ground also does not have proper change rooms," a team manager said on condition of anonymity.
"Although no player has complained, there must be adequate facilities for the players on ground. If the university is organising the tournament then it should ensure proper arrangements for the players, especially for women cricketers," the manager added.
In 2013, Panjab University decided to build a new cricket stadium on the campus, and the work finally started in 2015. The ground has been equipped with water sprinklers and other modern facilities, beside practice pitches. But it lacks basic facilities. "The drawings for changing rooms and restrooms had been submitted to the authorities concerned last year, but no work has been initiated so far," claimed a source.
