A tree plantation drive under ‘Tandrust Punjab Mission’ was jointly launched by Deputy Commissioner Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon and SSP Alka Meena in the district by planting saplings at the district administration complex here on Wednesday.
They called upon all religious, social organisations and NGOs to come forward for the noble cause. They said the level of pollution had reached its peak and tree plantation was the only way to control the growing menace.
“Our coming generations will suffer if we do not take appropriate steps immediately. It is dire need of the hour that every section of society should share the responsibility and help in reducing pollution,” they added.
The DC said more than 23,000 plants were distributed under the drive. All educational, religious, public places, parks and cremation grounds would be covered under the mission, he added.
He said efforts would be made to enhance the forest area in Fatehgarh Sahib.
He called upon the people to follow teachings of Gurus, who termed earth as mother, water as father and air as Guru. “We should treat all these as natural resources with same sentiments,” he added.
ADC Jaspreet Singh, Assistant Commissioner (Grievances) Charanjit Singh and Forest Range Officer Pawan Kumar also addressed the gathering on the occasion.
