Tractor-trailers overloaded with goods and raw materials are a common sight in the town which often leads to major mishaps. Despite this, the administration seems to be in a deep slumber.
Tractors registered for agricultural works were being used for commercial purposes, including carrying of goods and gravel. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, one cannot load a vehicle beyond its capacity. Sources said trailers with a loading capacity of 2,000 kg carries load over 4,000 kg.
The overloaded vehicles hardly leave any space for other drivers to overtake them. Moreover, trailers do not have brakes and in case a driver applies brakes to stops a tractor, trolleys skid or overturn on the road.
Traffic officials said, “Overloaded tractor-trailers usually ply during late night or early morning. Erring drivers have been challaned in the past.”
