Fungal disease awareness week

The Department of Medical Microbiology, PGIMER, Chandigarh, organised fungal diseases awareness week from September 23-27.
This is an initiative of the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the US, with the slogan, ‘Think Fungus’, which started in August 2017.
The aim was to spread awareness on fungal infections among different strata of population. The formal programme on September 26 was preceded by a quiz, slogan competition, artistic renditions and funny skit, and social media.
At the PGI, posters of common fungal infections in India, including keratitis, vaginal candidiasis, mucormycosis and dermatophytosis (tinea/ringworm) were displayed in OPDs and wards of the hospital for public viewing. Activities conducted during the week for residents, students and research scholars included slogan-punchline contest, fungiXperience contest and quiz competition where awards were won by different departments of the PGI and the GMCH-32.
PGI Director Prof Jagat Ram apprised the audience of the ubiquity of fungi in the environment. — TNS
