The Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi (CSNA) organised a ‘Mehfil-e-Qawwali’ by well known qawwali maestros Nizami brothers, including Ustad Ghulam Sabir Nizami and Ustad Ghulam Waris Nizami, at the Tagore theatre here on Saturday.

Credited with over 30 albums and overseas performances, including the prestigious Albert Hall London, and the International Womad festival,

the lead vocalists, Nizami brothers, supported by five trained voices and orchestra opened up with an invocation ‘mann kunto maula’, authored by Hazrat Amir Khusro, who had pioneered the 'Qawwali' format of sufi and spiritual singing in India.

They gave a soulful presentation of ‘mere banne ki baat na puuchho’ in laudation of the Almighty Allah and Lord Krishna with reverence. After the boisterous ‘chhap tilak sab chheeni’ immortalised by Amir Khusro, the duo presented ‘ye jo halka halka saroor hai’ and a concluding Punjabi sufi qawwali.

With felicitous use of ornate Urdu poetry, diction, rendition of soothing couplets with enchanting ‘andaz-e-byan’, the Nizami brothers, virtually send audience in trance.

Dr Atamjit, national SNA and Sahitya Akademi awardee, was the chief guest on the occasion. He was welcomed by Kamal Arora, Chairman, CSNA, and Atul Sharma.

The chief guest honoured the artists, while Balkar Sidhu anchored the absorbing concert with literary acumen and expertise.
