No policy against drugs
Every year, June 26 is observed as International Day against Drug Abuse. But recently in Ludhiana and TarnTaran a few persons lost their lives due to drug overdose. Such incidents raise questions over the policies of the government. Chief Minister Amarinder Singh assured the people of Punjab that his prime motive was to eradicate drug menace before coming to the power. However, after coming to power, the Punjab Government had constituted a special task force to fight the drug menace. The government also established an anti-drug squad called Drug Abuse Prevention Officer (DAPO). Sadly, the scenario has not changed much since then. The government should ensure that cases involving drug abuse are solved in a time-bound manner. There is a need to curb drug abuse and drug smuggling activities by implementing strict rules and laws.

No grace marks a welcome step
The UT Education Department’s idea to stop the practice of giving grace marks to Class IX students is a welcome step. The same rule should be applied to the students of Class XI too. This will improve the result of board classes. Remedial classes for students of Class XII were initiated this year at government schools in the city. Following the instructions of the Education Department, teachers came to schools and even did not go on holiday.

Install timers at traffic lights
The Chandigarh Administration has not installed timers at all light points in the city. These timers can play an important role in solving traffic issues and accidents. If a timer is available at a light point, then people can switch off their vehicles and save fuel. There are several light points in the city where these timers are not available which aggravates traffic problems.

Pole threat
On Saturday, an electric pole in Sector 44-D got tilted as a heavy branch fell on it. A complaint was lodged in this regard, but even after four days, no action has been taken by the civic body. Strong winds or storm can hit the area anytime. The tilted pole is posing a threat to the commuters and residents of the area. Anybody can meet with an accident here. The authorities concerned should immediately repair the pole before it gets too late.
