A dispute between Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) and the builder had a cascading affect on around 200 families residing in Shivalik Avenue, Sector 125, who had to spend the whole day without electricity on Friday.

Many residents of the avenue, including Manbir Sandhu, Vinod Midha, PDS Rana, Vinod Kumar, Rakesh Rayar, Aarti Bahra, Jyotishna, Ruby and HP Singh, said their electricity supply was disconnected at around 10 am today without any intimation to them.

“We are getting bills from the Mohali PSPCL office. The last date for payment of these bills is in the first week of October. The connections have been disconnected without any fault of ours,” they added.

When residents went to the PSPCL office in Industrial Area, Phase I, Mohali, they came to know that their electricity supply was disconnected by officials concerned as the builder owed Rs 12 lakh to the power corporation.

Residents of the colony expressed surprise that the builder had to clear the PSPCL dues, but they did not know why their power connections were disconnected.

Meanwhile, the PSPCL SDO, Surinder Singh, said, “The builder has not deposited the penalty amount of Rs 12 lakh. The connections of residents have been cut off due to this reason.”

When contacted, executive officer HS Obroi said he would look into the matter. When asked about Shivalik Avenue builder AS Hira, he said disconnection of power supply of the colony was a wrong step as the PSPCL was demanding money from him and not from the consumers.

“The builder has paid the amount to the PSPCL today,” he added.

Meanwhile, residents of Shivalik Avenue said the power supply was not restored to the colony till evening. “We have complained about this to various officers, but nobody is bothered about us. There was no electricity in the avenue for the whole day for no fault of ours,” they said.
