Mohali, October 26
In what could be termed a ‘shameful act’, the Mohali police have been ‘caught’ stealing electricity.
During a surprise check at the Phase 11 police station, located in Sector 66 here, power officials detected a ‘kundi’ connection being used to draw power illegally for the police station.
The power officials have imposed a fine of Rs 10 lakh on the local police.
According to sources, the amount of fine has been calculated on the basis of consumption of power for a period of one year. The police authorities have been given seven-day time to deposit the fine.
The sources added that the power connection of the police station was snapped a few months ago over non-payment of bills.
“After the power connection of the police station was snapped, the cops started stealing power through a ‘kundi’ connection. The illegal act was going on for the past several months,” said an official of the Power Department on the condition of anonymity.
Notably, the building had earlier housed the Sohana police station, which was shifted to a new building few months ago. Now, the Phase 11 police station has been set up in the building in question.
As per power officials, this is not the first instance of power theft involving local police. Earlier, the department had also caught cops stealing power at the Balongi and Mataur police stations.
