Patiala, September 6
Punjabi University, Patiala, has designed a ‘uniform pattern’ for writing and finalising the PhD synopsis to avoid confusion and uncertainty on the part of candidates and their supervisors. It will also help the other members of the Departmental Research Boards (DRBs), which, inter alia, comprise the deans of various faculties, heads of department and the outside experts nominated by the Dean, Academic Affairs, before forwarding the synopsis for registration in the Board of Postgraduate Studies and Research (BPSAR).
An indication to this effect was given by university vice-chancellor Ghuman during the last meeting of the BPSAR, when he, deviating from the past practice of clearing the topics in ‘top hurry’, pointed out some ‘visible’ drawbacks and mistakes in case of various presentations and asked them to be ‘careful’ in future while approving synopses presented in the DRB meetings.
Expressing concern over the quality of the degree of PhD, he called upon all faculty members concerned, who constitute the Departmental Research Board, to take up the issue seriously to halt the production of sub-standard PhD theses. He directed the HoDs to get fresh experts nominated by the Dean, Academic Affairs, in case outside experts abstain from meetings due to some valid reasons.
Dean, Research, Dr GS Batra has issued a circular to all departments to follow the uniform pattern of writing detailing about writing of the research problem, hypotheses and other components of the synopsis.
