A 38-year-old woman foiled two bike-borne miscreants’ attempt to snatch her purse outside her house in Sector 49 here this afternoon.

Monika Rana, a staff nurse at the Civil Hospital in Panchkula, was dragged for over 25 metres by two motorcycle-borne accused as she held on to the purse and thwarted the snatching bid. She received injuries in the incident.

According to the woman’s husband Krishan Malik, a High Court employee, Rana was waiting for a cab right outside their house in the Housing Board flats at about 12.40 pm. She was speaking to the cab driver on phone and had her purse in the other hand. In the meantime, two youths came on a black Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle and the one riding pillion tried to snatch her purse. Rana, however, did not let them have their way and held on to her purse. She was dragged for over 25 metres before the bikers sped away. The accused were wearing helmets. A vegetable vendor, who was present there, made an attempt to stop them but the pillion rider took his helmet off and tried to attack him.

As per the victim, while the person driving the bike was wearing a brown printed jacket, the pillion rider was wearing a black one.

A few neighbours, who witnessed the incident, noted down the registration number of the motorbike.

The victim then called her husband, who rushed home from work. The police were informed. He then took Rana to the Civil Hospital where she received treatment for bruises she received on her hands and knees.

The police reached the spot and registered a complaint in this connection. They verified the registration number of the bike and found it fake. Since there was confusion on a digit, they checked both numbers. “While one pertained to a Maruti car, the other was of a Splendor motorcycle,” said Malik.

Ranjodh Singh, SHO, Sector 49 police station, said, “Either the registration is fake or the people could not note down the correct number.”

The police have obtained the footage of a CCTV installed at a house near the spot, in which the accused are seen from a side.
