O Jugni Punjab Di — An ode to love legends, mystical tradition

Art lovers of the tricity were treated to a rare theatrical spectacle, ‘O Jugni Punjab Di’, an ode to slumbering love legends of Punjab, at Tagore Theatre here today.

A production by Delhi-based foundation was conceptualised and directed by Kathak classical dance guru, Vidushi Manjari Chaturvedi. Live music, dance and storytelling narration was part of the play.

Without a conventional story, it weaved episodes from love legends such as Heer Ranjha, Sohni Mahiwal and others. It was narrated by a person ‘Jugni’. The play relived the heritage of mystical traditions of Punjab as never seen before.

Soul-touching music by Ustad Ranjhan Ali from Punjab, storytelling performances by actor Balkar Sidhu, a Bharatnatym and folk dancer of international eminence, and Vikramjit Singh Rooprai, weaved magic on stage. Music, light effects and ecstatic dances by Manjari Chaturvedi were the lifeline of the production. Balkar Sidhu stole the limelight as a narrator and Sufi mystic.
