Panchkula, December 12
Around 30,000 people living across the Ghaggar have decided to protest against the solid waste management plant at Jheuriwala village. The construction work of the plant has been given to a French firm.
The proposed garbage treatment plant will come up on 33 acres.
The project is likely to impact those living in Sectors 24 to 28 and three villages around the dumping ground.
They have decided to start a dharna on the highway near the site. The plant will be set up by Mailhem Ikos Environment Private Limited.
RN Sehgal, president of the Sector 25 Residents’ Welfare Association, said the setting up of a garbage treatment plant at the village was grossly wrong and officials were unnecessarily bent upon harassing the residents. He said the site for the plant was only 400 meters away from Sector 25.
Sehgal said the proposed plant would impact residents of Moginand, Madanpur and Jaswantgarh villages besides those living at the five Panchkula sectors.
Municipal Commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said they had inspected a solid waste management plant in Pune recently. He said due to the negative pressure in the plant, the plant would not release foul smell.
