The Chandigarh Parents’ Association (CPA) has accused Ryan International School, Sector 49-B, of a tie-up with a private bookseller. The association submitted in a representation to the UT Education Secretary in this regard today.

The bills extracted from parents whose wards are studying in Ryan International School have only one bookseller mentioned on them. The address of the shop mentioned on bills is ‘Insight: A complete Book Shop, Sector 49-B near Puspack’.

Kawalpreet Singh, a parent, told The Tribune: “I have been purchasing the book set available at the school. It’s the same staff which sell the books every year. The books were once available outside the school, but the seller was same.”

The school had undertaken the practice of selling book sets on premises. A circular was released mentioning the dates for the class-wise book sale. According to the allegations of the CPA, the bookseller has a tie-up with the school.

However, school Principal Poonam Sharma said: “There is no such tie-up. The school books are available in the open market.”

The association has also pressed upon the implementation of the order — released by the Education Department on September 12, 2018 — regarding the use of only NCERT books.

The association has requested the Director of School Education to prescribe a uniform set of textbooks for all schools in Chandigarh under articles 222 and 249 of the Punjab Education Code.

Concerns raised by parents’ assn

  • Parents are not allowed to purchase selective textbooks even if they already have some of them.
  • Some books don’t have a printed MRP and some have fake addresses of the publishers.
  • Schools are selling books, stationery items and uniforms on premises
  • Parents are being forced to buy full set of textbooks, stationery items and uniforms from the shops designated by schools at exorbitant rates.
