Over 700 students of Punjabi University took part in a walk organised by Punjab Eco-Friendly Association (PEFA) on Thursday to raise awareness and express concern on climate change. Vice-Chancellor BS Ghuman said the university authorities are planning to make the institute an ideal varsity from environment point of view.
The students of the university were joined by students of Gems Public School and stated that they stand in solidarity with all environment activists voicing their concerns.
The activists expressed concern on how the climate is changing and said the future will be difficult if sincere efforts are not taken by government and civic society.
Ellu Kashyap, president, Punjabi University PEFA unit, along with Anmoljit Singh, Deputy District Attorney briefed the students that India is among the countries, which are most vulnerable to climate change and has one of the biggest economic hubs in the world.
Kashyap said by 2020, the stress on India’s water, air, soil, and forests is expected to become the highest in the world. “One of the most significant ways that climate change will impact the lives of people in India will be through its water resources. While water sustains life, it often wreaks havoc through devastating floods and severe droughts. A changing climate will only aggravate these shocks.”
Lovepreet Singh, general secretary, PEFA said they want to spread the message that the solution lies with the people themselves.
