Chandigarh, August 8

The traffic violators, who have been issued challans but did not pay fine, will not go scot free. The owners of the challaned vehicles will be denied no objection certificate (NOC) at the time of selling their vehicles.

Police officials said to get the NOC, the vehicle owners would have to ensure that no traffic challan was pending. The police issue the NOC to the vehicle owner for transfer of the ownership of vehicle.

Usually, TVIS (traffic violation information slip) challans, which are issued on the basis of violations caught on CCTV cameras or pictures of violations sent to the police through social media by people, are not paid by the violators. These challans are sent on the registered address of the vehicle owner.

Police officials said they had also recently procured 25 e-challaning devices, which enable traffic cops to check the past challan history of vehicles. The devices are connected to the Registering and Licensing Authority and the traffic police server, which help in getting the details of previous offences. Through e-challaning devices, the violators are issued e-challans.

“We are procuring more such devices which will be handed over to traffic staff on duty in the city,” said a police official.

The UT traffic police has also started sending reminder SMSes on the registered mobile number of the vehicles owners who have not paid fine.

Cops recently sent messages to 40,000 vehicle owners advising them to clear their pending challans at the Traffic Lines in Sector 29 to avoid any legal action.

Under the Smart City project, more CCTV cameras will be installed at different locations in the city. These will further help cops to keep check on violations.

598 turn up to clear challans in a day

On getting reminders from the police, a total of 598 violators cleared their challans by paying fine at the Traffic Lines on Thursday.
