Play throws light on plight of migrants in Canada

Chandigarh, November 30
Toronto-based theatre group Chetna Cultural Centre staged ‘Super Visa’, a socially relevant play, as a part of the literary series, ‘Bandanwaar’, organised by Punjab Sahit Akademi at Randhawa Auditorium here today.
Penned by playwright Nahar Singh Aujla, a Punjabi theatre activist in Canada, and directed by Master Tarlochan Singh, the play brought into focus the issues faced by migrants in Canada after the dispensation there changed rules with regard to reimbursement of medical expenses of their parents visiting the country on short-term visa.
Besides, the play touched on usual problems of language, culture, traditions and environment faced by Punjabis with rural background settled in Canada.
The actors, who are mainly from Canada and had been experiencing the ordeal, enlivened the play with their expressions.
Avatar Kaur Aujla, Harjaspreet Kaur and Parvesh Sethi played the key roles.
Earlier, a Punjabi book, ‘Akhran da Rath’, authored by Deep Gill Pangliyan, was released by Dr Atamjit, recipient of the Rashtriya Sangeet Natak and Sahitya Akademi Award.
Punjab Sahit Akademi secretary Dr Satish Verma said more shows of the play would be staged in the region to create awareness among immigration aspirants.
