Just about a week after the registration of a case against senior advocate SK Garg Narwana and others, the Haryana Police has reportedly cancelled the FIR with regard to him. The development took place two days after the police conceded that nothing vital had been found against him.
Though a formal communication in this regard is yet to be presented to the Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association, available information suggests that members were verbally informed about the culmination of the proceedings in favour of Narwana.
“We have been verbally informed that Narwana’s name has been dropped after recording statements and preliminary investigations,” said honorary secretary of the Bar association Ravinder Singh Randhawa.
The developments took place soon after lawyers strongly condemned the act of the Haryana Police, especially the Panchkula police, in registering the FIR against the senior Bar member.
The addition of his name in the list of the accused in an alleged fraud case involving property at Zirakpur had led to large-scale protests. Coming out in his support, the lawyers had not only met Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, but also abstained from work.
A Bar Council delegation, led by chairman Vijender Singh Ahlawat, after meeting Khattar, had also submitted a written representation for the cancellation of the FIR against Narwana. The delegation told the Chief Minister that the Panchkula police registered the FIR in a “very hasty manner”, causing resentment among lawyers in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.
