Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal held Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh responsible for the treatment being meted out to two lakh SC students in Punjab who were not being allowed to sit in examinations and whose degrees were withheld by Panjab University.

Badal said, “Students are suffering because the Congress government has not released around Rs 500 crore to SC students under the Centre’s Post-Matric Scholarship (PMS) scheme.”

Badal said cases should be registered against officials as well as the Minister for Welfare of SCs and BCs and the Finance Minister for failing to distribute scholarships to educational institutions.

He said, “Due action should also be taken by the Centre against the government for diverting Rs 270 crore received in February for the scheme.” He said there was a backlog of around Rs 250 crore, taking the total amount due to students to more than Rs 500 crore. — TNS
