PU launches student-exchange forum with US varsity
Chandigarh: The Hindi Department of Panjab University (PU) on Friday launched a joint student-exchange forum with Penn State University of the US. Dr Suchismita Sen, Director, Hindi Language Programme, and Senior Lecturer, Asian and Religious Studies, Penn State University, visited the department and finalised the proposal. Dr Sen interacted with faculty and students of the Department of Hindi and discussed opportunities for joint ventures between the two universities. Dr Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Department of Hindi, said, "This is the first-of-its-kind opportunity for students of our department to gain an international exposure through a joint student-exchange forum." Dr Sen said due to Hindi films, there was interest in the language in the US. "Hindi language programme started in 2013. Those who opt for Hindi language programme are wards of NRIs or those who want to pursue research in India," she said. She went to the US in 1979.
Pharmacy alumni meet at PU
The Panjab University Pharmaceutical Society (PUPS) organised a class reunion-cum-alumni meet for diamond jubilee batches (BPharm 1957), golden (BPharm 1967, MPharm 1969) and silver jubilee batches (BPharm 1992, MPharm 1994), at the Evening Studies Auditorium on Thursday. Prof TR Bhardwaj, Dean, School of Pharmacy and Emerging Sciences, Baddi University, Himachal Pradesh, and Former Chairperson, UIPS (2002 to 2005), was the chief guest on the occasion. Three alumni from the golden jubilee batch and 17 from the silver jubilee batch attended the event with great fervor. The ceremony was initiated by the welcome address by Prof Kanwaljit Chopra, chairperson, UIPS & president, PUPS. She said, "Alumni are the brand ambassadors of any institute and have a pivotal role in defining the future of any institution." She requested the alumni to be more actively involved in activities of the institute to build UIPS as a world-class institute. TNS
Man robbed of mobile phone
Chandigarh: Six unidentified miscreants riding two motorcycles robbed a mobile phone from a Nayagaon resident. According to the police, the complainant, Sudhir Saini, a resident of Adarsh Nagar, Nayagaon, reported that six persons robbed his mobile phone in front of a wine shop in Nayagaon. The incident took place on intervening night of December 20 and 21. A case under Sections 341 (wrongful restraint), 392 (robbery) and 34 (acts done by several persons furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered at the Sector 11 police station and an investigation initiated. Licence for commercial music
Chandigarh: It will be mandatory to get licence to play commercial music at Christmas or New Year parties with the Central Government renewing the copyright licence of the Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS). Arvind Sharma, area manager of the IPRS, said the renewal of licence by the Central Government has made the “IPRS the only official and functional copyright society for musical works in India.” Requesting the party organisers to get licence for playing music, he said as per the Copyright Act - 1957, performance of music without licence/NoC from the IPRS was infringement of copyright laws.TNS
Woman crushed to death in Lalru
Lalru: A 36-year-old woman was crushed under wheels of a truck here on Thursday night at Lalru. The deceased has been identified as Kamla, aka Kamlesh, a resident of Lalru Mandi. The incident took place on Thursday night when the victim was returning home. The police said a rashly-driven truck, coming from the Ambala side, ran over her. The truck driver fled the spot. The police on Friday got the post-mortem of the body conducted at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. A case has been registered. OC
389 new lawyers on Bar Council
Chandigarh: As many as 389 advocates were enrolled in the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana during a function at Law Bhawan at Sector 37 on Friday. Justice Inderjit Singh of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, who was the chief guest on the occasion, distributed enrolment certificates among them. TNS
Nigerian held with heroin
Mohali: A team of the Special Task Force (STF) on Friday arrested a Nigerian with 200 gm of heroin. Giving further details, SP Rajinder Singh Sohal said a police party arrested Cheemija, a native of Nigeria, from Mango Garden in the Phase III Industrial Area. The police said the accused had been involved in drug trafficking for some time. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act. The Nigerian national is a football player and had arrived in India on a sports visa. According to sources, the accused had procured the heroin from a supplier in Delhi and was supposed to give it to someone in Mohali. Sources said that he was supposed to be paid Rs 15,000 to supply the drugs. TNS
