PWD, civic body begin recarpeting of roads

The Public Works Department (PWD) and the Municipal Corporation (MC) Patiala have begun to recarpet roads within city limits. Residents were a harried lot as condition of roads in most parts of the city was pathetic. Recently the state government awarded a grant of Rs 100 crore for this purpose.

Nearly 70 per cent of the major roads in Patiala city come under the ambit of the PWD, which will spend around Rs 33 crore. The stretches which will be recarpeted include the road connecting Sheesh Mahal to Ghalori gate, Dakala road along Chhoti Nadi, Upper Mall road, Internal Baradari Garden road, Rajbagh road, Bhupindra road, Lower Mall road, Sanaur road among others. The PWD has commenced work on Sanaur road.

The MC has allotted tenders worth Rs 7 crore for internal city roads and Rs 2.5 crore separately for roads at Focal Point. Officials said recarpeting work will commence within a week at Mathura colony, Rajindra Lake, Hira Bagh and  Focal Point.

The civic body will start recarpeting roads near Lahori gate, along the PRTC workshop, Tafazalpura main road, Ablowal, Tripuri, Anand Nagar, Sirhind road, Ragho Majra, Sabji Mandi, Khalsa College, Partap Nagar and Model Town among others. The MC will also be fitting interlocking tiles at Tripuri, Anad Nagar and roads at focal point.

MC Executive Engineer MM Syal said, “The Municipal Corporation will start work within a week and we will ensure it gets completed by June 30.”
